History of Mailam Murugan Temple

Mailam Murugan Temple

Lord Muruga and Soorapadman went to war because of the captivity and torture of the Devas. Lord Muruga defeated Soorapadman in this battle. After that due to his devotion to Lord Muruga, he came to this place and did penance Lord Muruga appeared to him. Soorapadman then asked, “You should accept me as your vehicle.” Accordingly, Murugan accepted him as his peacock vehicle. Soorapadman then transformed into a mountain in the form of a peacock. The view of this mountain is amazing as if a peacock had spread its wings. It is said that the wart is now called a ‘Peacock’.

Mailam Murugan Temple Structure

In this temple, Lord Muruga is standing with Valli-Deivanai. He is seen holding a vel in one hand and a rooster flag in the other. In most temples, the peacock, the vehicle of Murugan, faces south or straight. The specialty of the temple is that it faces the north direction only here. The direction for penance is North. As Soorapadman here turned from his penance towards the north to become Murugan’s vehicle, the peacock vehicle here has the honor of sitting facing the same direction.

On Mailam Hill, Nochi trees are abundant. Every morning during the puja, Nochi leaves are garlanded and decorated to the Moolah and Utsava Murthys. After that other garlands are put on. There is a huge veld and peacock outside the sanctum sanctorum where the moolavar resides. Every Tuesday during the Kalashanthi Puja they perform Velayudhuttuarchan. It is believed that financial problems will be solved for the devotees who do this kind of archan. Similarly, next to Utsavamurthy Lord Murugan Temple is his army commander Veerabagu.
