Located in Pillayarpatti, between Pudukkottai and Karaikudi, is the oldest Cave Temple (Rock Cut) in Tamilnadu, known as pillayarpatti vinayagar temple. On the Thirupathur – Karaikudi State Highway, Pillayarpatti is located 12 km from Karaikudi and 71 km from Madurai. The temple is the source of the village’s name. In contrast to other locations where he is seen with four hands, Lord Vinayaga appears here with two hands. Karpaga Vinayagar is the name of the deity who rules over six feet (valampuri posture). The temple contains more than fifteen inscriptions that contribute to its age. The temple’s main celebration takes place during the August–September Vinayagar Chathurthi festival.
It is lavishly observed for ten days. Every month, Sankata Hara Chaturthi is also observed with a festive appearance. In contrast to other locations, the three goddesses Sivagami Amman, Vadamalar Mangaiamman, and Soundara Nayagiamman, as well as the three lingams Thiruveesar, Marudhesar, and Senchadeswarar, all appear simultaneously at the same location and bless the devotees. There are also trust-maintained cottages that can be reserved in advance.
This is an old temple carved out of rock. According to scholars, Lord Vinayaga is the Lord of Wisdom. He is also referred to as “Karpaga Vinayagar” because he grants his followers’ wishes, just like the Karpagam tree does. In contrast to other locations where he is seen with four hands, Lord Vinayaga appears here with two hands. In addition, he can be seen sitting in the “Artha Padma” Asanam, with his legs folded and his stomach not touching the Asanam, without the Angusapasam. Vinayaga is a word that means “Incomparable Leader”. Worshippers of Valamburi Vinayagar who face north while seated will be bestowed with prosperity.
This temple is dedicated to the worship of the Marudha tree, or “Marudeeswarar” (Terminalia Arjuna in Botanical Name; Sanskrit Arjuna Virutcha). The fact that this temple is old suggests that it was built long ago. The unique feature of this temple is the sculpture of Pasupatheeswarar, which depicts “A cow worshipping Lord Siva by offering his milk.” This temple was also the place of worship for Kubheran, the Lord of Wealth.
Goddess Laxmi, Saraswathi, and Durgai are all found together in the same sport, which further enhances the spirituality.
