Thillai Natarajar Temple is an important tourist attraction found in central part of the temple town, Chidambaram. The chief deity is Lord Shiva who is in the form of Nataraja, a cosmic dancer. This Hindu temple has great religious, historic & cultural significance. There is also a deity of Lord Govindaraja Perumal, making it one among few Temples in tamilnadu where both deities are worshipped in one place. As one of the pancabhoota stalas, it signifies space. The roof of Sanctum sanctorum is coated with gold plates.

Thillai Nataraja Temple, Chidambaram is a specimen of several architectural styles. The inmost sanctum houses the grand idols of Nataraja and Sivakami in Chit sabha, adjoining which is Kanaka Sabha, both these structures placed on a raised platform. The Chit sabha is a wooden structure floated with wooden pillars having a hut shaped roof. Here, the images of Shiva and parvathi are kept in front of two curtains. The outer one is black in color and inner one is invisible, being red in color. There is a revered Chidambara Ragasyam at the right side, which represents Lord Shiva in formless form. In chit sabha, other images like Ratnasabhapati, Swarnakarshana Bairavar, Chandramauleeswara in the form of Spatika Lingam, Mukhalingam etc, are also found. Across to the Nataraja Shrine in second prakaram is Nritta Sabha with 56 pillars and houses an image of Lord Shiva in Urdhva Tandava Posture and Sarabheswara. 108 poses of Bharatha Natyam are marked out here. This hall is built in the form of chariot. The deva sabha houses the festival images of Pancha Murtis and other deities. The outermost prakaram is a home to Sivakami Amman Temple, sivaganga tank and the Raja saba or 1000 pillared hall. Ceilings on Mukhamandapam of Chidambaram temple have the paintings from Nayaka period. Its entrance bears two elephants with dancing figures on the basement.
