Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, Srirangam is the world’s largest functioning temple with amazing architecture and ornamentation. Apart from 7 prakaras with massive walls, this temple has 21 huge & colorful sculpted gopurams, 9 sacred pools, 50 sub shrines, gilded vimana and other interesting features like fresco paintings. The Rajagopuram is the world’s second tallest temple tower with 72 m height. Many mandapams are found at Ranganathaswamy Temple. One among is Hall of 1000 pillars, which is a planned-theatre like structure made of granite. Another artistically interesting hall is Sesharayar mandapam comprising of monolithic pillars along with the carvings of wild horses, which bear riders on its back and trampling their hoofs on the heads of rampant tigers.

With courtly portrait sculptures, Garuda mandapam has a free-standing shrine of eagle headed God, Garuda. Ranga Vilasa mandapam is comparatively huge in size carrying the figurines of Bala Ramayana and discriminating murals. The outer vimana has finely worked pillars accompanied by double capitals, fluted shafts and also pendant lotus brackets. The walls of Thiruvarangam Temple are found with exquisite paintings made of vegetable and herbal dyes, which portrays the culture and custom followed at those times.
