Arulmigu Arunachaleswarar Temple, Tiruvannamalai is a world famous pilgrim centre devoted to Lord Shiva. It is found at the base of Annamalai Hills, which is just 1 Km from Tiruvannamalai Bus Stand. Arunachalam Temple is also referred as “Pancha Boodha Sthalam” or “Agni sthalam” or even “Padal Petra Sthalam”. The temple is unique because of its high rampart walls, stately towers, spacious gateways, broad quadrangles, fine tanks and large mantapams. This SIVAN TEMPLE is known for its sculptural beauty and architectural importance.

The temple faces east and has four stately towers on all four sides. The Eastern tower is called Raja Gopuram, which is 217 feet tall comprising of 11 storeys. The southern tower is named as Thirumanjangopuram and similarly walls in the west and north is called Peygopuram and Ammaniamma Gopuram. Just like rampart walls of forts, it has four high stone walls with hills at its background. The Annamalaiyar Temple, one of the famous Temples in tamilnadu has totally nine gopurams and seven prakaras with two big tanks namely Siva Ganga theertham and Brahma theertham. At the entrance, you can view Thousand pillar hall having the sculptures of Naik period. There is also an underground chamber called Pathala Lingam Chamber.
